Write your passion

But to get in the door you may need to write the market.

But not something you hate.

Don’t get too anxious.

READ THE CONTRACT!!!

Writing novels is a craft.

2 parts:

  1. Craft
  2. Story

Both are equally important…

Decide what you are called to write and dabble at your own risk.

Establish yourself. What do you like to read?

Uniqueness

THE ACT OF WRITING IS THE ACT OF DISCOVERING WHAT YOU BELIEVE…

What makes a good idea?

Don’t tell stories of just things that happen in your family.

Novels are about people - character driven.

Recognizing ideas:

Great ideas are rare, good ideas come all the time.

Great ideas stick with me.

Settings can be interesting ideas.

Great ideas have a certain sparkle when you see it.

Great ideas arouse my passion.

Great ideas are something I can bring other people into the passion.

It may be farfetched ideas and that’s OK

Great ideas are not cookie cutters.

Give yours a twist.

If the seed has potential greatness???

DON’TS

Overused elements

No passion

Seasons are important, some things might be years in the making…

We will face fear, that the finished product will not measure up to the passion.

BUT IT WILL!!!!

First draft is not the one that goes out the door. 700 words a day

scene cards are an options, 3x5 cards, color coded? Shuffle the scenes

type and let it flow, don’t worry about spelling, use footnotes, leave notes for yourself.

You can fix the first draft

2 nd draft – fill in the gaps

she wrote – The Note

first draft 45000 supposed to have 90000 words?

Don’t worry about length

25000-30000 novella

60000-70 novel

100-130000 novel

90000 is good length.

Some write and cut, others add in.

Don’t give too much back story up front.

Have things that have to do with character development.

3 rd draft, worry about the beauty of the language

4 th polish mood music draft, thunder thrumbed, violins

5 th typo check

Have a person read certain passages to you.

The ear can pick up what the eye doesn’t. use the computer to read it.

All 5 drafts are before the editor reads anything.

Have others read it, but don’t always

Hemingway – 27 drafts on an ending.

You can tweak ideas but don’t be married to it.

Don’t suffer from – “I can write it all it”
